On this day in 1913, the Hellenic navy led by Rear Admiral Pavlos Kountouriotis aboard his legendary flagship Averof defeated the Ottoman navy off Lemnos island. The historic ship, which is anchored at her permanent berth south of Athens, was instrumental in helping Greece gain supremacy over the Aegean Sea. Full story:
