Spartan Warrior by Theofilos Rigas

Theofilos Rigas:

Hey guys just thought I’d share a painting I did of a Spartan:

THE SPARTAN

Just finished my latest oil painting “The Spartan” depicting the Spartan warrior standing before the Hot Gates (Thermopylae). Click on HD link!

At the bottom of the painting can be read in Ancient Greek, Simonides’ epitaph:

Go, tell the Spartans, stranger passing by

That here, obedient to their laws, we lie.

To my knowledge, the Lamda on the shield was not in use during the time of the Persian wars, but it’s so iconic for the Spartans, so to get around this in the painting I decided to make blood fall over the shield and create a Lamda type shape. As this picture is not necessarily a picture of a Spartan at Thermopylae but a tribute to the Spartan warrior in general.

I am very happy with the way this turned out, take a look!
